Tips for Photographing Newborn Twins

Photographing twins can be tricky, two wiggly babies waking each other up is a challenge. During most shoots, even with one baby, I feel like I could really use 8 hands on some setups but with twins, it’s a whole other level! It is really important to have the following things in place:

..

HAVE A PLAN!

I can’t emphasize this enough when you are photographing twins, have a plan in place. Know what props you are using if they are awake, if they are asleep, or if just one is awake and one is asleep. Know what you will wrap them in if that is needed at any given time. I always have my props laid out and have options for wrapping or not at any time. Sometimes you can’t wait for both babies to be asleep at the same time so you have to be ready to wrap if needed. If you have a plan, things will go much more smoothly, and be ready to pivot at any moment! It is really helpful to be able to spread out and spend a little more time on the setup for these sessions so that when you are ready, you are really ready.

NEWBORN SHOOT ESSENTIALS!

I did a whole blog post about the 5 essentials I use for every newborn shoot, find it HERE! These things are extra important for keeping the babies asleep; heat & white noise are your best friends here!

BE PREPARED TO COMPOSITE!

We composite anyway when we do the “froggy pose” so be prepared that you might not get both babies where you want them at the same time and completely settled. Shooting them separate in a prop or on the posing table and doing a composite later is definitely an option and something you should be prepared to do in post-production. This could help things go much more smoothly and quickly during your session.

INDIVIDUAL SHOTS!

Don’t forget to get individual shots of each baby. Although twins are adorable together, it is very important to let them have at least one setup of their own. They will always have the special identity of twins but as they move through this world it is very important that they have their own identity as well.

STAY CALM AND SHOOT ON!

Always stay calm or at the very least appear to stay calm and in control. They last thing you want is for the baby or parents to sense your stress or frustration if something isn’t going exactly right. The whole idea is to plan and have contingency plans so you are never really caught off guard and can pivot at a moment’s notice! Good luck friends! Keep shooting!!!
