What is the best age to photograph a newborn?

After 20 years as a Los Angeles Newborn Baby Photographer, I think the best age to photograph a newborn baby is typically within the first two weeks of life. During this time, babies are usually more sleepy and flexible, making it easier to pose them for adorable and natural-looking photographs. Newborns are also less likely to be bothered by colic or baby acne during the first two weeks. Sometimes as time goes on past 2-3 weeks hair loss will occur for some babies, which is definitely not their best look…think Friar Tuck! LOL

Photographing a newborn within the first 5-12 days would be the ideal range, if I always had my way. They are still very sleepy and can be posed in those curled-up, womb-like positions. This age range also allows you to capture the tiny features of a newborn, such as their wrinkled skin, tiny fingers, and toes. This is not to say that babies can’t be photographed beyond this point, they definitely can and can have a very successful session, this is just a general rule of thumb for the easiest true newborn session.

It is very important to take into account things like c-sections for the comfort of Mama and any health concerns the baby might have like jaundice, feeding problems, any birth complications, etc. The 2-week range can certainly be extended and is sometimes necessary, don’t worry, the photographs always turn out beautifully no matter the age. Adjustments can be made and the session is altered to fit, that’s the best part about a custom session!

We hope, no matter the age, you continue to document your family and their journey, and we hope to help you do that!
